Mission

The mission of the Office of Technology Development (OTD) is to:

  1. Promote commercialization of technologies arising from Boston University faculty research;
  2. Foster an entrepreneurial environment for BU faculty and students;
  3. Create strong interactions between the BU research community and the greater Boston corporate and financial communities; and
  4. Invest BU assets in top-tier venture capital partnership and co-investment opportunities.

OTD’s mission is accomplished by five core groups within OTD working together to provide a comprehensive approach to the commercialization process.  Whether we begin with novel concepts, mature academic technologies or emerging companies, OTD’s suite of support services and industry experts provides the opportunity to achieve success at every stage along the path to commercial success.  The five core groups are:

  • Translational Research
    Seeks to establish partnerships with industry around the creation and development of BU applied technologies.
  • Technology Transfer
    Protects intellectual property, primarily through patenting, markets these technologies and negotiates licenses with industry or faculty start-ups.
  • New Ventures
    Provides advice, guidance and support to those in the BU community exploring the possibility of starting a new company.
  • Business Incubation
    Offers early-stage companies state-of-the-art office space, laboratories and a host of support services for launching new technology ventures.
