Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad Fellowship Program

PROGRAM: Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad Fellowship Program

OBJECTIVES: This program provides funding for faculty members to engage in research or study abroad in the disciplines of modern foreign languages and area studies. A research project supported by this program must focus on one of the following absolute priority areas: Africa, East Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, South Asia, the Near East, East Central Europe and Eurasia, and the Western Hemisphere (excluding the Unites States and its territories). Projects focused on Western Europe will not be supported.  The Department will give competitive preference to research projects that focus on one of the 78 languages deemed critical on the U.S. Department of Education’s list of Less Commonly Taught Languages (please see program guidelines for this list).

For FY 2010 the Department has established the following invitational priority: Research projects that focus on one of the following fields or topics: Environmental Science, Ecology, Climate Studies, Development Studies, Economics, Public Health, Education, or Political Science. A project that responds to this invitational priority will not be given a competitive or absolute preference over other applications.

FUNDING INFORMATION: The Faculty Research Abroad Fellowship Program provides between $25,000 and $115,000 in funding for three to twelve months, with an average award size of $70,000. Approximately 20 fellowships will be awarded in FY 2010.

REMARKS: Applicants to the Faculty Research Abroad Fellowship Program must prepare their applications using E-Application, the Department of Education's electronic proposal submission system. E-Application can be accessed at http://e-grants.ed.gov. The University must submit all electronically prepared applications to the Department of Education on behalf of the individual applicants. All applicants must complete their on-line application preparation and must notify Geri Montgomery, Associate Dean's Office, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, 725 Commonwealth Avenue, Room 115 by Friday, November 6, 2009. Applicants are urged to register with E-Application and review the on-line documentation as soon as possible.
