PROGRAM: Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award

OBJECTIVES: This program provides funding to support the research and teaching careers of talented young faculty in the chemical sciences. Established in 1969, based on institutional nominations, the program was designed to provide discretionary funding to faculty at early stages in their careers. Criteria for selection included an independent body of scholarship and a commitment to education that signaled the promise of continuing outstanding contributions to both research and teaching.

The Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Awards Program is focused primarily on individual research accomplishments and promise, but evidence of excellence in teaching is also expected. Awardees demonstrate leadership in research and education. Nominations must provide compelling evidence of the advance of important knowledge in the chemical sciences by the nominee. Further, the nominees will be assessed with respect to dedication, contributions, and innovations in education in the chemical sciences. Recommendations for these awards are based primarily on the nominee's achievements as an independent faculty member as assessed by the Foundation's reviewers and the judgment of the nominee's peers exemplified by letters of recommendation. Other considered factors are: awards and honors, publication of research achievements in leading journals; and success in attracting funding of research. Consideration will also be given to evidence of dedication to educational activities (classroom and research) involving undergraduates.

ELIGIBILITY RESTRICTIONS: Institutions may submit only one nomination to the Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar program. Nominees must hold a full-time tenure-track academic appointment, and are normally expected to be within the first five years of their independent academic careers.

FUNDING INFORMATION: The award provides a $75,000 unrestricted research grant. Of the total amount, $7,500 is for departmental expenses associated with research and education. Funds are normally expended over a period of five years.

INTERNAL REVIEW PROCESS: Faculty wishing to be considered for nomination should provide the following proposal material to Associate Provost Joan Kirkendall, Office of Sponsored Programs, 25 Buick Street, Boston, MA 02215, for internal review purposes:
 
1. The candidate's curriculum vitae (Maximum length: 7 pages)

2. A letter of nomination which states the reasons for the candidate's selection, and highlighting the candidate’s achievements. (Maximum length: 3 pages)

3. A summary description, with references, of the candidate's research accomplishments, and a description of future research and teaching plans. (Maximum length: 7 pages)

Nomination material will be collected and forwarded to the Office of the Vice President for Research for final selection. All nomination material should be received Friday, December 11, 2009.
