Fellowship Competition: Creative Writing in English: Fiction and Poetry
|
AGENCY: The George A. and Eliza Howard Foundation
PROGRAM: Fellowship Competition: Creative Writing in English: Fiction and Poetry
OBJECTIVES: This program provides sabbatical support for faculty working on specific writing projects for the academic year 2010-2011. Please note that Howard Fellowships may not be used to prepare exhibits, nor are they available to support institutional programs.
The George A. and Eliza Gardner Howard Foundation was established in 1952 by Nicea Howard in memory of her grandparents. Although Miss Howard had a special interest in the Arts, her stated purpose was to aid the personal development of promising individuals at the crucial middle stages of their careers. The Foundation awards a limited number of fellowships each year for independent projects in fields selected on a six-year rotational cycle devoted to fields in the liberal and fine arts.
ELIGIBILITY RESTRICTIONS: Candidates, regardless of their country of citizenship, must be professionally based in the United States either by affiliation with an institution or by residence.
The intention of the Foundation is primarily to support scholars in the middle stages of their careers whose work to date is evidence of their promise and achievement. The designation mid-career refers to those who are no longer beginners in their field, and those who have not yet realized their full potential. They should, therefore, have a significant record of publication beyond the dissertation. Nominees should generally have the rank of assistant or associate professor or their non-academic equivalents.
DEADLINES: November 9, 2009
FUNDING INFORMATION: The Foundation plans to offer ten fellowships for the 2010-2011 fellowship year. Stipends for one year are typically $25,000 and do not include a residency requirement. Support is intended to augment paid sabbatical leaves, making it financially possible for grantees to have time in which to pursue their projects, free of any other professional responsibilities. Accepted nominees should be eligible for at least one semester sabbatical or other leave with guaranteed additional support.
