AGENCY: U.S. Department of Education/Office of Postsecondary Education (OPE)

PROGRAM: Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad

OBJECTIVES: This program provides funding to support overseas projects in training, research, and curriculum development in modern foreign languages and area studies for groups of teachers, students, and faculty engaged in a common endeavor. Projects may include short-term seminars, curriculum development, or group research or study. A group project funded under this competition must focus on one or more of the following geographic regions of the world: Africa, East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific, the Western Hemisphere (Central and South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean), East Central Europe and Eurasia, and the Near East. The following projects will have competitive preference in this competition: (1) short-term projects abroad in the countries in which one of the 78 languages deemed critical on the U.S. Department of Education’s list of Less Commonly Taught Languages (see guidelines for the full list) are spoken; and (2) projects focused on short-term seminars that develop and improve foreign language and area studies at elementary and secondary schools. In addition, projects that increase participation of underrepresented minorities in foreign languages and in area and international studies are encouraged.

DEADLINE: October 6, 2009

FUNDING INFORMATION: The U.S. Department of Education anticipates providing approximately $2.32 million in FY 2010 to support 29 awards for up to twelve months. DoEd estimates the size of awards at $80,000 per year; however, applicants may request between $30,000-$90,000.
