Fellowships 2010-2011

AGENCY: National Humanities Center

PROGRAM: Fellowships 2010-2011

OBJECTIVES: The National Humanities Center offers 40 academic-year residential fellowships for advanced study. Most of the Center's fellowships are unrestricted; however, several are designated for particular areas of research. These include environmental studies and history; English literature; art history; French history, literature, or culture; Asian Studies; and theology.

The Center provides an environment for individual research and the exchange of ideas among scholars. Its facilities include private studies for Fellows, conference rooms, a central commons for dining, lounges, reading areas, a reference library, and a well-equipped Fellows' workroom. The Center's library service delivers books and research materials to Fellows. The Center also provides support for information technology and editorial assistance.

ELIGIBILITY RESTRICTIONS: Applicants must hold the doctorate or have equivalent scholarly credentials, and a record of publication is expected. Both senior and younger scholars are eligible for fellowships, but the latter should be engaged in research other than the revision of a doctoral dissertation. Scholars from any nation and humanistically inclined individuals from the natural and social sciences, the arts, the professions, and public life, as well as from all fields of the humanities, are eligible.

DEADLINE: October 15, 2009

FUNDING INFORMATION: Fellowships up to $60,000 are individually determined. The amount provided depends upon the needs of the Fellow and the Center's ability to meet them. The Center provides travel expenses for Fellows and their dependents to and from North Carolina. Fellowships are supported by the Center's endowment, by private foundation grants, and by the National Endowment for the Humanities.
