PROGRAM: Postdoctoral Fellowships in the Humanities
OBJECTIVES: This program provides postdoctoral fellowships to individuals to explore and clarify the interrelationships within the humanities as well as their relationship to the natural and social sciences. This program strengthens the intellectual and academic qualifications of the fellows by: (1) affording the time and resources to develop independent scholarship within a broadening educational and professional context; (2) involving the fellows in interdisciplinary programs of general education and innovative courses of their own design; and (3) associating the fellows individually and collectively with the teaching scholars at the university.
Fellows are appointed as lecturers in appropriate departments at Columbia University. This one-year fellowship is renewable for a second and a third year. In the first year, fellows teach one course per semester. At least one of these courses will be in the undergraduate general education program: Contemporary Civilization, Literature Humanities, Music Humanities, Art Humanities, Asian Civilizations, Asian Humanities, or Global Cultures, including those of Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East. The second course may be a departmental course, the design of which will be determined jointly by the fellow and the fellow’s academic department. In the second and third years, fellows teach one course per year, leaving one semester free of teaching responsibilities. The courses taught in the second and third years of the fellowship may be departmental courses or courses in the undergraduate general education program as described above.
ELIGIBILITY RESTRICTIONS: Fellows newly appointed for 2010-2011 must have received the Ph.D. between 1 January 2006 and 1 July 2010.
DEADLINE: October 5, 2009
FUNDING INFORMATION: Postdoctoral fellowships provide a stipend of $55,000 per year and are typically two years in duration. One-half of the stipend may be used for independent research and one-half is for teaching in the undergraduate Core Curriculum. Full fringe benefits will also be available and an additional $5,000 may be available to support research.
