DFG/NEH Bilateral Digital Humanities Program: Enriching Digital Collections
|
AGENCY: National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH)/The German Research Foundation (DFG)
PROGRAM: DFG/NEH Bilateral Digital Humanities Program: Enriching Digital Collections
OBJECTIVES: This program supports digitization projects in the humanities. These grants provide funding for up to three years of development in any of the following areas: new digitization projects and pilot projects; the addition of important materials to existing digitization projects; the development of related infrastructure to support international digitization work and the use of those digitized resources.
ELIGIBILITY RESTRICTIONS: Collaboration between U.S. and German partners is a key requirement for this grant category. Each application must be sponsored by at least one eligible German individual or institution, and at least one U.S. institution, and there must be a project director from each country.
DEADLINES:
Internal BU Deadline: September 21, 2009
Agency Deadline: October 8, 2009
FUNDING INFORMATION: Awards range from $100,000 to $350,000 for up to three years. The amounts requested from each funding agency generally should not differ by more than 20%; any disparity over 20% requires justification in the budget. Cost sharing is not required. NEH, however, is rarely able to support the full costs of projects approved for funding. In most cases, NEH grants cover no more than 50-60% of project costs. DFG expects that participating institutions make a reasonable contribution to the cost of the project. This contribution must be specified in the proposal.

REMARKS: An internal deadline has been established to coordinate institutional cost-sharing commitments for this program. Principal Investigators (PIs) interested in submitting a proposal should forward a memorandum to their Associate Dean by Monday, September 21, 2009. In the memorandum, (1) briefly describe the proposed project, (2) list key participating faculty, (3) itemize all cost-sharing commitments being requested from the University, within the context of a fully developed project budget, and (4) cite any program features which should make it particularly competitive for NEH funding. The memorandum should be countersigned by the relevant department chair/center director to indicate endorsement of the project. After the Dean's assessment, if a commitment of Provost funds is required, the memorandum will be forwarded to Associate Provost Joan Kirkendall for review and then to the Provost’s Office for authorization. PIs will then be advised of authorized institutional cost-sharing commitments in time to complete the project budget and process their proposal for final review. PIs are encouraged to consult with the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) for assistance with the preparation of the project budget.
The partners will collaborate to write a single application package, which the U.S. partner will submit to the NEH (via Grants.gov) and the German partner will submit to the DFG via regular postal service (additional submission of a pdf version via e-mail is encouraged).
Instructions and forms are available on the Grants.Gov website (http://www.grants.gov).
