AGENCY: United States Department of State (STATE)/ Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs/ Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) PROGRAM: Fulbright Scholar and Lecturing Awards 2009-2010 OBJECTIVES: The Fulbright program offers faculty, professionals and independent scholars the opportunity to lecture and conduct research in countries around the globe. The program serves two primary purposes: (1) it enables Americans to learn firsthand about other countries and cultures, and enables the people of other countries to learn more about the United States and its citizens; and (2) it promotes academic and professional development. The traditional Fulbright Scholar Program sends 800 U.S. faculty and professionals abroad to 140 countries each year for two months to an academic year. Grantees lecture and conduct research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields. The Fulbright Senior Specialists Program provides short-term Fulbright grants of two to six weeks. Activities offer U.S. faculty and professionals opportunities to collaborate on curriculum and faculty development, institutional planning and a variety of other activities. Fulbright German Studies Seminars take place in Berlin and provide three-week seminars on a specific topic relevant to current German society and culture. Fulbright International Educational Administrators Seminar Program sends U.S. administrators to Germany, Japan and Korea for two- to three-week summer seminars, and brings administrators from Japan and Korea to the U.S. for similar seminars Fulbright awards are granted to men and women with a diversity of qualifications including: teachers and scholars with international reputations; recent Ph.D.’s who show great potential as researchers; community college faculty who teach at the undergraduate level; excellent teachers and scholars with modest publishing records; retired faculty and professionals; and professionals or independent scholars outside academe. For a lecturing award a doctorate is normally required at the time of application. In some cases foreign language proficiency is required.
