OSP FO# 09- 029
Earth Sciences Research

AGENCY: National Science Foundation (NSF)/ Directorate for Geosciences (GEO)/ Division of Earth Sciences (EAR)

PROGRAM: Earth Sciences Research

OBJECTIVES: The Division of Earth Sciences (EAR) provides funding to support research and education related to the Earth's terrestrial regions, interior, and freshwater systems. Projects may employ any combination of field, laboratory, and computational studies with observational, theoretical, or experimental approaches. Human resource development and education are expected to be an integral part of most research proposals, but are also eligible for direct support. Multidisciplinary work is strongly encouraged. Projects involving disciplines outside the earth sciences will be recommended for joint support with other programs within the Foundation. EAR will consider co-funding projects with other agencies and supports international work and collaborations.

The Division of Earth Sciences is comprised of two Sections:

(1) The Surface Earth Processes (SEP) Section will support research on processes occurring at or near the Earth’s surface, studies of the stratigraphic record and paleobiology, and crosscutting studies on education and human interactions with the geosphere. The following programs are part of the SEP Section: Education and Human Resources (EH), Geobiology and Environmental Geochemistry (GEG), Geomorphology and Land Use Dynamics (GLD), Hydrologic Sciences (HS), and Sedimentary Geology and Paleobiology (SGP).

(2) The Deep Earth Processes Section (DEP) will support research on the Earth’s crust, mantle, and core, crosscutting programs for the support of earth science instrumentation and facilities, and the EarthScope facility and associated science and education activities. The following programs are part of the DEP Section: Continental Dynamics (CD), EarthScope: Science, Education, and Related Activities (ES), Geophysics (PH), Instrumentation and Facilities (IF), Petrology and Geochemistry (CH), and Tectonics (TE).

REMARKS: Applications must be submitted electronically using either the NSF FastLane system or Grants.gov. Collaborative proposals must be submitted via FastLane. For more information about FastLane, or to register as a FastLane user, please contact Kathleen Foster in the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) at x3-4365 or kfoster@bu.edu. Information about Grants.gov for BU Investigators can be obtained on the OSP website at: http://www.bu.edu/osp/pdf/Grantsgovinfo.pdf. In addition, for investigators interested in submitting proposals via Grants.gov, NSF has published the NSF Grants.gov Application Guide which may be found online at: http://www.nsf.gov/bfa/dias/policy/docs/grantsgovguide.pdf. Investigators should contact the OSP Assistant Director assigned to their school or department as soon as possible to coordinate submission through either FastLane or Grants.gov.

Complete program guidelines and application material (NSF 04-613 and NSF GPG 09-1) may be obtained from the web site listed above or from the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP). Please distribute this notice to any faculty or staff members who might be interested in the information.
