PROGRAM: Beckman Young Investigator Program

OBJECTIVES: This program provides funding to promote research in chemistry and the life sciences, broadly interpreted, and particularly to foster the invention of methods, instruments and materials that will open up new avenues of research in science. The program is intended to provide research support to the most promising young faculty members in the early stages of academic careers in the chemical and life sciences. Projects should show promise for contributing to significant advances in the research fields of interest to the Foundation. They should represent innovative departures in research rather than extensions or expansions of existing programs. Proposed research that cuts across traditional boundaries of scientific disciplines is encouraged.

ELIGIBILITY RESTRICTIONS: No more than two candidates may apply from any one institution. To be eligible, an applicant should not have completed more than three full years in his or her tenure-track or other comparable independent research appointment. No individual may apply for a Beckman Young Investigator award more than three times. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States at the time of their application.

Foundation Deadline: October 1, 2008
 
FUNDING INFORMATION: Projects are normally funded for a period of three years. Grants are generally in the range of $300,000 over the term of the project. The Foundation does not provide funds for overhead or indirect costs.

INTERNAL REVIEW PROCESS: Faculty wishing to be considered for nomination should provide the following proposal material to Associate Provost Joan Kirkendall, Office of Sponsored Programs, 25 Buick Street, Boston, MA 02215, for internal review purposes:

(1) Letter of recommendation from the appropriate Department Chair or Research Mentor, highlighting the nominee's achievements and the basis for selection;
(2) Description of the nominee's proposed research project (maximum length 3 pages); including the rationale for the proposed work, its potential importance, and the approach to be taken;
(3) Nominee’s biographical sketch (2 pages).

Nomination material will be collected and forwarded to the Office of the Vice President for Research for final selection. All nomination material should be received by Monday, August 4, 2008.
