PROGRAM: Mallinckrodt Grants

OBJECTIVES: The Edward Mallinckrodt, Jr. Foundation is a private foundation that funds basic biomedical research throughout the United States. The mission of the Foundation is to support early stage investigators engaged in biomedical research that has the potential to significantly advance the understanding, diagnosis, or treatment of disease. The funds are designed to provide to tenure track faculty members at American institutions who hold M.D. and/or Ph.D. degrees start-up support to move the project forward to the point where R01 or other independent funding can be obtained.

ELIGIBILITY RESTRICTIONS: Each institution is allowed to submit only two investigators in a given cycle.  Applicants should be tenure-track and not have current R01 funding.

BU Internal Deadline: June 21, 2013
Foundation Deadline: August 1, 2013

FUNDING INFORMATION: The regular grants provide $60,000 per year for a period of up to three years.  The grants are not renewable. Funding for years 2 and 3 is contingent upon approval of a yearly progress report by the applicant submitted via e-mail. The Foundation will not fund overhead.

INTERNAL REVIEW PROCESS To screen potential proposals for this competition, an internal deadline has been established. Principal Investigators (PIs) interested in submitting a proposal should forward a memorandum to their Associate Dean by Friday, June 21, 2013. In the memorandum: (1) briefly describe the proposed research, (2) list key participating faculty, and (3) cite any program features which should make it particularly competitive for funding.

The memorandum should be countersigned by the relevant department chair/center director to indicate endorsement of the project. After the Dean’s assessment, the memorandum will be forwarded to India Adams in Sponsored Programs and then to the Office of the Vice President for Research for final selection. PIs will be informed if their proposal is selected for submission in time to complete the project budget and process their proposal for final review.

REMARKS: The application should be submitted via email in one pdf file to Becki Blankenship at emjf.org@gmail.com. The application is due on August 1, 2013.
