PROGRAM: Sloan Research Fellowships
OBJECTIVES: This program provides funding to young scientists in the disciplines of physics, chemistry, pure and applied mathematics, neuroscience, economics, computer science and computational and evolutionary molecular biology for the establishment of laboratories and independent research projects. Fellows are free to pursue whatever lines of inquiry are of the most compelling interest to them. Sloan funds can be applied to a wide variety of uses for which other, more restricted funds cannot be employed.
ELIGIBILITY RESTRICTIONS: Candidates for Sloan Research Fellowships are required to hold the Ph.D. (or equivalent) in chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science, economics, neuroscience, computational and evolutionary molecular biology, ocean sciences or in a related interdisciplinary field, and must be members of the regular faculty of a college or university in the United States or Canada. Candidates may be no more than six years from completion of the most recent Ph.D. as of the year of their nomination unless special circumstances exist.

FUNDING INFORMATION: Sloan Fellows are awarded $50,000 total for a two-year fellowship period. Funds will be awarded directly to the Fellow’s institution and may be used by the Fellow for such purposes as equipment, technical assistance, professional travel, trainee support, or any other activity directly related to the Fellow’s research. Funds are not intended to augment an existing full-time salary or for indirect or overhead charges by the Fellow’s institution.

REMARKS: Candidates must be nominated by department heads or other senior scholars. Direct applications are not accepted. All nomination materials must be submitted two ways: in hardcopy format via mail, and in electronic format via email. Nomination forms are online at http://www.sloan.org/assets/files/srf/srf_nomination_form_web_2011.pdf. In addition to the nomination form, the nominator should submit a letter describing the candidate’s qualifications and must see that the Foundation receives three supporting letters directly from other scholars, preferably not at the same institution. A curriculum vitae, a list of scientific publications plus one copy of no more than two representative publications, and a brief (one-page) statement by the nominee describing his/her significant scientific work and immediate research plans should accompany the nomination form and letter.
