Diagnostic Examinations

Placement examinations are used to help determine what course level is appropriate for you. During University Orientation 2008, the following placement examinations will be given: Boston University Writing Assessment (BUWA) and Foreign Language placement examinations in German and Japanese.

  • Foreign Language placement examinations in Spanish and French, and the Engineering Diagnostic Examination, may be taken online (Placement examinations in other languages can be taken through the Department of Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures (MFLL). You can contact MFLL at 617-353-2642.

  • The Mathematics and Statistics Department offers information on courses and an online diagnostic examination in Pre-Calculus to help students choose the appropriate mathematics or statistics course.

Boston University Writing Assessment (BUWA)

Boston University administers a writing assessment in order to receive a diagnosis of students' achievement level in reading and writing upon entering the University. All students (except those entering the College of General Studies) are required to participate in the Boston University Writing Assessment (BUWA).

  • If you are arriving early for University Orientation, you may take the BUWA on Wednesday at 3 pm.

  • The BUWA is also offered on Thursday morning as part of the regularly scheduled orientation. If you are participating in the Common Ground Program on Wednesday, you will take the BUWA at its regularly scheduled time on Thursday.www.bu.edu/cas/writing/buwa.html


The BUWA is a fifty-minute essay examination requiring you to read, summarize, and evaluate a short excerpt similar in kind and in difficulty to readings typically assigned in University courses. Students for whom English is not their first language will receive placement solely on the basis of the BUWA.

Foreign Language Placement Examinations

If you intend to fulfill your School/College foreign language requirement with a language previously studied, you must take a foreign language examination.

  • Spanish and French placement examinations are offered online at http://lpt.bu.edu. Please take the foreign language examination prior to your Orientation session. New students in COM will take the examination during their Orientation session.

  • The German placement examination will be offered during University Orientation.


If you have studied another language other than those listed above, you must arrange to either take a placement examination or meet with a representative from the Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures Department in the Fall.

Mathematics Diagnostic Examination


Students in CAS, SAR, SED, SEP, and SMG


Students in COM, CFA, CGS, and UNI

  • New students in COM, CFA, CGS, and UNI not taking a mathematics course are not required to take the Mathematics Diagnostic Examination.

Students in SHA

  • New students in SHA are not required to take the Mathematics Diagnostic Examination.

Chemistry Placement Examination

New undergraduates wishing to take Chemistry courses are required to take the Chemistry Placement Exam, since this is a prequisite for many 100-level chemistry courses.

  • This examination is taken online by any incoming student with their BU Computing Accounts (Early Bird Registration). Taking the paper examination requires arrangment with the Chemistry Department prior to orientation.

College of Engineering

New students in ENG are required to take the Engineering Diagnostic Examination (EDE). It is a test of algebra and trigonometry. The EDE must be taken by June 15, 2008, and is available online. Students will know their results immediately upon submitting the examination, and will be advised accordingly. Music Theory Proficiency Examination

College of Fine Arts students entering the School of Music are required to take a Music Theory Proficiency Examination. An optional group piano waiver examination is also available. These examinations will be offered at each College of Fine Arts University Orientation session. Please contact the College of Fine Arts with questions at 617-353-3350.
