FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why should I attend University Orientation?
University Orientation ensures that you are properly registered for classes and sets the expectations of what it means to be a citizen at Boston University. You will receive important information to help you succeed. Orientation attendance for all new students is mandatory.
How do I register for University Orientation?
Once you have paid your deposit, you will be able to register for University Orientation at www.bu.edu/orientation starting on May 1, 2016.
Are there benefits to attending an earlier session?
It is to your advantage to attend University Orientation in June or July. Although classes are opened up throughout the summer, going to an earlier session allows you greater course selection at more convenient times than later in the summer. Students who attend earlier sessions have stated that it is comforting to be familiar with Boston and complete class selection a month or more before classes begin. This allows new Terriers to positively visualize themselves as part of the BU Community.
Students who attend sessions in June and July are also eligible to apply for FYSOP, the First-Year Student Outreach Project. Students selected to participate in FYSOP return to campus one week prior to the start of the fall semester to engage in a week of education and service in one of ten focus areas, including abilities, animals, children, elders, environment, gender and sexuality, homelessness and housing, human rights, food justice, and public health. FYSOP offers students the opportunity to reconnect with friends met during Orientation, meet peers with similar passions, explore the neighborhoods of Boston and make positive community change through service.
Is there a Parent Program?
Parent Orientation runs concurrently with University Orientation. We strongly encourage parents to attend. Approximately half of incoming students’ families attend Parent & Sibling Orientations.
Is on-campus housing available during University Orientation in June & July?
Students are required to stay on campus at a BU Residence Hall on Thursday night. Additional nights are available by request for Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. There are a limited number of rooms available for participating parents Tuesday through Saturday. This is a good opportunity for parents to experience college life and enjoy a beautiful view of the city of Boston.
