Medical Physics & Radiation Safety Division

The Medical Physics and Radiation Safety  program at BU and BMC provides various trainings to ensure compliance, support exceptional patient care, and ensure the safe use of radioactive materials. Subdivided into two specialties, Medical Physics has the core responsibility of ensuring the safe and proper functioning of diagnostic imaging equipment with specific regard to radiation safety and image quality, while Radiation Safety has the core responsibilities for establishing and maintaining the programs for the use of clinical and research radiation sources and ensuring compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. The 7 West Radiation Safety Awareness Training for Nurses is a mandatory training offered by the Medical Physics and Radiation Safety Office. This training provides a basic understanding of radiation, emergency procedures, and signage for inpatient procedures involving radioisotopes.

Declared Pregnant Radiation Worker Consultation

The Declared Pregnant Radiation Worker Consultation is a service offered by the Medical Physics and Radiation Safety Office for pregnant personnel who wish to declare their pregnancy to the Medical Physics and Radiation Safety Office. Once pregnancy is formally declared, the consultation is mandatory. This individual consultation will review the fetal dosimetry monitoring process as well with the risks and biological effects of radioactive exposures during pregnancy.

Physicians’ Fluoroscopy Credentialing Training

Physician Fluoroscopy Credentialing Training is required of all licensed physicians, including fellows and residents, who use or anticipate using fluoroscopic x-ray equipment at Boston Medical Center. This is including but not limited to: anesthesiologists, cardiologists, gastroenterologists, interventionalists, orthopedists, pain management physicians, pulmonologists, radiologists, surgeons, and urologists. Educational objectives include identification of biological risks, radiation units and doses, principles and operation of fluoroscopic equipment, and techniques to minimize radiation doses to patients and staff.
