Getting Started with Animals on the Charles River Campus

All Animal Users:

Boston University has a mandatory training program, based on federal regulations, that require training for all animal users to ensure that they are qualified to work with and handle animals. In accordance with the University’s Personnel Training and Qualifications Policy, Boston University’s IACUCs on the Medical Campus  (BUMC) and the Charles River Campus (CRC) require training for all individuals working with laboratory animals.

All animal users are required to complete this training prior to working with animals; the IACUC will not approve animal use applications until training has been completed.

  • Complete Research Occupational Health Programs (ROHP): Initial Health Assessment forms (IHQ). Must be cleared by ROHP for access to animal facility and hands on animal training. There is an annual update requirement beginning one year after initial clearance.
  • Complete IACUC Orientation (online,one-time requirement) All individuals working with laboratory animals must complete IACUC Orientation. IACUC Refresher Training This is an annual requirement, beginning one year after orientation.
  • Complete EHS Lab Safety Training (classroom or online) This training is an annual requirement, beginning one year after initial training.
  • Complete LASC New Researcher Orientation This lecture covers all aspects of the BUASC animal facilities. This is a one-time requirement.
  • Complete Facility Tour (s) where your animals will be housed. W7, W8,W9, aquatic (700 Albany Street), and R8 (Research), and M9 (Fuller), and CRC (conventional, barrier, aquatic) .
  • Be listed on an IACUC approved protocol.
  • Complete a security access form and submit to the Main Office.

 Orientation to use of LACF: Aquatic & Main Facility

This orientation is required for anyone using the CRC’s Laboratory Animal Care Facility (LACF), which houses live animals on the CRC campus.  This course will highlight the basics of PPE for the facility being used, operations, Special Requests, and any particular needs of the research group’s animals.  Fill out the following form BUASC Security Access Application and provide the completed form at the beginning of your orientation.

ABSL-2 Training and Tour

This is an orientation to the methods used to handle animals in the LACF under ABSL-2 condition. It includes how cages should be handled and what needs to be done for PPE, and for disposal/cleaning of materials used.
