Lab Safety Training for Researchers

Laboratory Safety Training for Researchers is now offered two ways—classroom or online. Personnel can choose to attend either.

Laboratory Safety Training (Classroom)


Training applies for both BUMC and CRC.

Taught by Research Safety team members, covering biological safety, chemical hygiene, waste management, and life & fire safety. The classroom training can also be requested and tailored for specific groups.

Audience: Principal investigators, lab safety coordinators, and all personnel (faculty, staff, students, trainees, visitors) who will work with biological agents

Duration: 1.5 hours

When Offered: 4 times a month: views schedule

Prerequisite: None

Laboratory Safety Training (Online)


Training applies for both BUMC and CRC.

Set up in modules so that personnel can take the portions that apply to their work and type of laboratory. You only need to take the modules pertaining to your work and the type of lab in which you work. For more information, see the Online Training Tutorial.

The following modules are currently available:

  • Universal Lab Safety Training
  • Biosafety Level 1 and 2 Training
  • Chemical Safety Training
  • Bloodborne Pathogen Training
  • PI Training Module
  • LSC Training Module

Laboratory Safety Training for Summer Programs


Training applies for both BUMC and CRC.

Boston University and Boston Medical Center often host summer programs that allow students to work in BU or BMC research or teaching laboratories. This offering of Laboratory Safety Training is customized to each program’s specific curriculum. Topics may include chemical and biological safety, fire and life safety, emergency management, waste management, and other information based on the program’s unique needs.
