Research Project Export Control Checklist

In order to ensure compliance with export control laws, PIs must submit the completed form to the Office  Sponsored Programs (Medical Campus) or the Office of Sponsored Programs (Charles River Campus) at the time of application for each new, renewal, and noncompeting continuation sponsored research project. Any changes that occur must be provided to OSP in a timely manner.

Members of the staff of OSP-MED or OSP-CRC will review the Checklist. If your answers to the Checklist suggest that your project may involve export controlled materials or information, they will ask you for any additional information needed. PI’s must provide an updated Checklist promptly if any of the information in the responses to the Checklist changes. If the project is permissible under the University’s Policy on Open Research and a license is required (e.g., for travel or shipping abroad), the investigator will work with the Office of the General Counsel to complete the necessary application and provide any documentation required by the federal agency. No controlled activities can begin until a license has been obtained. It normally takes 2-9 months to secure a license to export controlled materials from the U.S. or to transmit them to a non-U.S. citizen within the U.S.
