Environmental Health and Safety
Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) promotes health, safety and environmental protection in teaching, research, clinical, public service and administrative activities by providing training, advice and other compliance assistance and by promoting safety in all aspects of the Boston University and Boston Medical Center (BU/BMC) community. The EHS website serves BU/BMC through the Office of Research Compliance and encompasses the five major EHS programs located on both campuses, Campus and Clinical Safety, Emergency Response Planning, Environmental Management and Waste, Radiation Safety and Medical Physics and Research Safety. Within these programs we have outlined the services and training offered to all members of the BU/BMC Community, as well as the resources needed to contact our personnel in an emergency or for routine requests of Environmental Health and Safety..

ORC Training
From shipping biological material to noise exposure to working safely with animals to flying an airplane, the Research Compliance Training Site has all of your training needs. Well, ok maybe not flying lessons but, this site does offer a comprehensive list of all training provided though the Office of Research Compliance for for Boston University and Boston Medical Center, at both Campuses. Our goal was to offer the BU/BMC community a website which provides a plethora of information about each training program as well as a schedule of upcoming trainings and the ability to register and/or take the training online.

Research Occupational Health Program
The Research Occupational Health Program (ROHP) is part of the Office of Research Compliance serving Boston University and Boston Medical Center and is focused on the health, wellness and safety of the University’s scientific research community. ROHP promotes a culture of safety in research by utilizing comprehensive best practices to perform medical surveillance, workplace risk assessments, biosafety and agent training, and clinical occupational health services led by board certified Occupational Medicine physicians.

Office of Sponsored Programs
The Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) is part of the Office of Research Compliance and provides comprehensive support to members of the Boston University research community who are engaged in the preparation and submission of research proposals and the management of funded research projects. As steward of the university’s externally-funded research portfolio, OSP ensures that all research proposals and projects adhere to Boston University’s academic and research policies and meet its obligations to external sponsors. OSP supports investigators who have or plan to apply for external sources of support for their research, departmental administrators who assist with proposal preparation or award administration, and department chairs and deans who supervise research-active units.

Research Information Management System
Research Information Management Systems (RIMS) is the system implemented by the Boston University / Boston Medical Center Office of Research Compliance designed to provide researchers and others with a single location to submit, modify or renew all their Research Compliance related information such as protocol approval requests (e.g. animal use, or biological use authorizations), hazardous materials inventories (e.g. chemical, biological, or radioactive materials), personal rosters and training records, equipment lists, etc., as required by various regulatory agencies or campus oversight policies.

Animal Care
The Boston University Animal Care Program is part of the Office of Research Compliance serving Boston University and Boston Medical Center and is located on both Campuses to better serve your animal research needs. The animal care programs share IACUC Policies and Guidelines, Veterinary Oversight and Training resources. The BU Animal care Program is a team of administrative, managerial, technical, and professional staff committed to the advancement of science in collaboration with the research community by promoting the humane care and use of animals used in biomedical research and teaching.

Research Committees
Boston University and Boston Medical Center have sought to maintain the highest standards for research and have multiple research committees. The AVP of Research Compliance serves as the Institutional Official and appoints the various committee members, which are composed of faculty investigators from both campuses with expertise in many areas. These committees include: the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), the Laboratory Safety Committee (LSC), the Radiation Safety Committee (RSC), and the Dive Safety Committee. Some of the responsibilities of these committees are to review and approve research proposals, the oversight of research compliance, the development and recommendation of comprehensive polices and guidelines and inspections of laboratories and facilities with reports to the Institutional Official (IO).

Human Subjects
Boston University and Boston Medical Center (BU/BMC)have and Institutional Review Boards (IRB) for the Campuses. The purpose of the IRB is to protect the rights and welfare of human subjects of research and to assure that clinical research is conducted according to corresponding federal regulations, state law, and IRB policies. All research or clinical investigations involving human subjects in which BU/BMC, its staff, its students, or its patients are involved may be subject to the authority of the IRB, regardless of funding source or other regulatory requirements.
