Getting Started

Now that you’ve received your acceptance letter, you probably have some questions about how to begin your Boston University Online degree or program. By following the steps outlined below, you’ll be ready for online learning:

  1. Obtain your Login Name and Kerberos Password
Once you have received your acceptance letter, the first step is, well, to wait. You will receive an e-mail notification from our offices when it is time to set up your Boston University login name and your Kerberos password. These two pieces of information will be very important. You will need them to register, to check your grades, and to pay your tuition. Your e-mail notification will walk you through the process of setting up your login name and Kerberos password. Until it arrives, breathe a sigh of relief and congratulate yourself—you’re about to become a student at a great university.
  2. Choose your Courses
When you have set up your login name and Kerberos password, you’ll be ready to register for class. But first, you’ll need to select which classes you’ll take—your academic department will probably guide you in this decision, but you can also visit the Boston University Online Course Schedule to find out which classes are available for your program during the semester you plan to begin studying.
  3. Register for Class*
After you select your courses, it’s time to officially register. To do that, visit the Boston University Student Link and select the Registration button. You will be asked to enter your login name and Kerberos password. Search for your courses by College and semester, Student Link will guide you through the rest. Click here to access a document display of this process in detail.
  4. Verify Your Account
Next, you should verify that you are registered for the right classes, and settle any tuition payments—you can do this on Student Link. Verify your schedule by selecting Current Schedule under the Academics menu. Check on your balance by selecting Student Account Inquiry under the Money Matters menu.
  5. Order Your Books
The easiest way to get your books and course materials is to order them directly from the Boston University Barnes & Noble Bookstore. They’ll have everything you need in stock and can ship it directly to you.
  6. Attend Orientation
Each Boston University Online course has an orientation for students to complete before it begins. We’ll notify you when it’s time, and send you a link where you can access your orientation materials.
  7. Check Your Browser
To be sure your computer is ready to go for class, complete a browser check. These can be found on the main login page of your learning management system, Blackboard, or intranet.
  8. Sign in to Class
Use your new BU ID and password to access all of your course materials—you’ll find them on the Student Login page.
  9. Sharpen your pencils!
It ’s time to get studying.
