It is useful to periodically restate Boston University’s long-standing policy regarding the release of institutional data through surveys, questionnaires, publications and external reports. The purpose of this policy is to ensure that university data that appears in official publications, or is provided to outside agencies, is accurate and compiled using consistent definitions and data bases. The policy requires that all external requests for university data be routed through the Office of Institutional Research to make certain that we have uniformity in the reporting of university statistics and information. The Office of Institutional Research maintains an archive of statistical data and is responsible for responding to requests for such data from external agencies, which include the federal government, state and local governments, publishers of college guide books, etc.
Should your office receive a request for school or program specific data, along with general university data, please complete the part of the request which is school or program specific and forward the material to the Office of Institutional Research for completion of the institutional section. If it is more convenient for you, the Office of Institutional Research staff is available to assist you in completing the portion of any information request pertaining to your school as well. Also, as appropriate, Institutional Research will provide you with a copy of the completed survey or questionnaire.
In addition, if you are preparing a report or document for publication or external distribution, please review the use of institutional data with the Office of Institutional Research. If you are developing material through the Office of Creative Services, as part of its editorial review this office confirms information with Institutional Research when it is deemed necessary.
If you have any questions regarding this procedure, please feel free to contact Melanie Madaio-O’Brien, Executive Director of Institutional Research, at 3-2256.
Thank you for your cooperation in assuring that Boston University’s public information is accurate and up-to-date.
