Initiative for Technology Entrepreneurship
As one of the nation's premier research universities, located in the heart of one of the most vibrant centers of technology innovation in the world, Boston University is committed to making its considerable resources available to companies and entrepreneurs with emerging growth opportunities. We are able to bring together what is arguably one of the most comprehensive set of resources of any university in world.
- BioSquare BioSquare is Boston's preeminent biomedical research and business address. It allows outstanding biomedical research companies and businesses the opportunity to work in tandem with leading principal investigators in their fields from the Boston University Schools of Medicine, Dental Medicine and Public Health.
- The Photonics Center The Photonics Center is an incubator where companies can develop, and commercialize Photonics technologies by accessing our equipment, laboratory facilities, and technical expertise, thus leveraging the vast technical assets of the Center and Boston University to augment their company's capabilities. The Center and Beacon Photonics, a holding company that creates vertically focused venture capital development companies (VCDCs) have developed a program that focuses and accelerates the development and commercialization of advanced Photonics technologies and products by bringing together the best ideas, both from within and outside the University, and combining them with the expertise and resources of the University and the business community. Whereas traditional incubators or venture funds provide start-ups solely with space and capital, this unique program affords portfolio companies access to all of the tools necessary to accelerate their time to market.
- Technology Development TD is Boston University's portal for its technology commercialization activities. Its primary mission is to promote commercialization of technologies arising from faculty research. The University's primary focus is on transferring technologies developed by its faculty; however, consideration will be given to bringing technologies which originated elsewhere onto campus if there is, at a minimum, a compelling synergy with an existing research program or core competency. Because scientists and clinicians employed by Boston Medical Center are members of Boston University's faculty, TD will provide these services for BMC-owned technologies also.
- Institute for Technology Entrepreneurship & Commercialization ITEC provides customized education, training, mentoring, networking, and other opportunities that help create sustainable enterprises to meet important global needs in sectors such as healthcare, clean energy and information systems. ITEC is an educational resource for all Boston University students and alumni. Events throughout the year include networking opportunities with fellow student and alumni entrepreneurs, a day-long course in how to create a business plan, and a business concept competition that allows students to receive feedback on their idea. Students across BU can register for entrepreneurship courses - with the professor's permission - on topics such as technology commercialization, feasibility analysis, launching a successful venture and building a company.
- The Health Care Entrepreneurship Program HCEP was established at Boston University's Health Policy Institute in 1996, to initiate and support entrepreneurial business development in health care, to advise start-up businesses, and to mentor students and fellows. Increasing interest in Entrepreneurship among medical students led to the creation of a formal elective at Boston University School of Medicine. Eight to ten fourth-year medical students now spend one month at HCEP learning about the early stages of business development and career options in the business world.
