The Birth Sister Training Program gives community women the skills needed to provide home visiting support, peer education and labor support to the diverse families served by the Birth Sister Program. The training program is based on a philosophy of empowerment education that focuses on the strengths and skills that women bring to their own community. It is a key aspect of the program's commitment to community development for populations at high-risk for poor childbirth outcomes - for many of the women, Birth Sister skills provide a stepping stone to other career opportunites.

Birth Sister Basic Training Course : A 60-hour labor and postpartum doula course that addresses basic childbirth education concepts, labor support techniques, breastfeeding education basics, postpartum care issues, early parenting skills, home visiting techniques, and other women's health issues.

Trainer-training : A workshop designed to develop leadership skills and classroom and clinical teaching techniques in experienced Birth Sisters.

Continuing education program : Through monthly meetings, Birth Sisters participate in on-going continuing education sessions that address a variety of women's health topics.

The training program is offered free of cost for Birth Sisters and is open to outside applicants for a fee.
