Network Problems
Before reporting a network problem, you should
run through the basic troubleshooting information given below. However,
if the nature of the network problem is not an isolated event (i.e., a
large number of computer users cannot gain access to the network or the
Internet), please contact Network Systems immediately at 353-2780.

Information
Most often, laptops and personal computers have network
cards with "link status" lights. These are small and green and they indicate
that you're connected to a network and the card is working properly -
look for it where the network cable attaches to your laptop/computer.
If the light is on and
you are unable to connect to any network resources or the Internet,
your network configuration may be off, call the PCSC
at 353-PCSC or your local System Administrator to verify your settings.
If this light is not on, it may be for several reasons;
- The network cable is not plugged into the Ethernet
jack on the wall/or is in the wrong jack -Try the available jacks
until you see a green light on/near the network card (computer must
be powered on)
- The network card/driver is not installed properly
- Re-install the software for the card or contact the PCSC
for assistance
- The network card could be defective - Contact
the PCSC before replacing the
card
- Your Ethernet jack(s) may not be activated -
Submit a connection
activation request to Network Systems
If after following these steps you still suspect that your
network connection is faulty, please send an email to nethelp@bu.edu
and provide your name, telephone number, office/room number, and the number
and location (i.e., Lower Left, Lower Right, etc.) of the Ethernet jack
you're having trouble with. A Network Systems staff member will soon be
in contact with you.
