Official Registration

All students are expected to register during the normal registration period each semester. Exact dates, methods, times, and locations of registration are published in the Metropolitan College Course Schedule each semester. However, all students must be registered before the end of the second week of classes each semester. Students in special programs that commence later in a semester are not allowed to register later than the end of the first week of the program. Students who are applying for loans or who are recipients of financial assistance will have their applications or awards terminated if they are not registered by the official registration deadline. An officially registered student is one who has registered for classes, paid all charges (current and past), and been approved by Student Accounting Services.

Checks must be made payable to Boston University. No student may withdraw in good standing unless all current obligations to the University are paid. The Trustees of the University reserve the right to change tuition rates or fees at their discretion.

Late Payment Payment received after the official deadline will result in a minimum late payment fee of $50 for part-time students and $150 for full-time students.

Medical Insurance

The 2006/2007 cost for full-time students (U.S. citizens and international) is $1,288 per year.

Massachusetts law requires all students carrying at least 75 percent of the full-time curriculum to be covered under a qualifying medical insurance plan. If the student does not wish to participate in the Boston University Medical Insurance plan, he or she must annually file a Medical Insurance Waiver form that certifies coverage under a comparable medical insurance plan. The Medical Insurance Waiver form should be returned to Student Accounting Services, 881 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA 02215-1390.

Part-time students are also eligible to purchase the medical insurance. For information, contact Student Accounting Services, 881 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA 02215-1390.

The insurance premium is subject to change.

Deferred Payment

Part-time Metropolitan College students who wish to make monthly payments may do so through a deferred payment program. Please refer to the Metropolitan College Course Schedule for further information. A nonrefundable service charge and a minimum down payment of one-fourth the total tuition and full payment of fees for the semester are required at the time of registration.

Graduate Fellowships and Assistantships

A limited number of graduate fellowships and assistantships are available to qualified Metropolitan College graduate degree candidates. For information about the fellowships and assistantships and instructions on how to apply, call the department which is offering the graduate degree.

Memorial Scholarship

at one of the following Boston area community colleges: Bunker Hill Community College, Mass Bay Community College, Middlesex Community College, Northern Essex Community College, and Roxbury Community College.

A total of 25 recipients of this annual scholarship will receive a 50% tuition scholarship for up to 12 credits per semester while they complete their bachelor’s degree at Metropolitan College. Those selected for the Community Scholar Academic Scholarship will be required to maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above to continue to receive the tuition benefits of the program.

For further information, please contact the Office of Undergraduate Student Services at 617-353-2980 or metuss@bu.edu.

Metropolitan College Alumni Scholarship

This unique scholarship program for undergraduate students was established and is funded by Metropolitan College Alumni. Annually, the Metropolitan College Alumni Scholarship Committee awards tuition scholarships to selected academically qualified, part-time undergraduates who are close to graduation and who require financial assistance to complete their degree. These scholarships are designed to recognize the academic achievement of Metropolitan College students while helping to meet their distinctive financial needs. For further information please contact the Office of Undergraduate Student Services, 617-353-2980.

Dropping and/or Adding Courses

Students are encouraged to enroll in all courses which they intend to take during the semester at the time of registration. Course changes can be made only during the official drop/add period, determined by the University Registrar and published in the current Metropolitan College Course Schedule. Courses may be added only during the first two weeks of classes. Students should consult the Metropolitan College Course Schedule for information regarding tuition refunds for dropping courses.

Withdrawal from Courses and Refund Policy

Part-time students who reduce their course load (but remain registered) for the fall or spring semester will have their accounts adjusted to reflect the difference between the original and reassessed tuition charges. Students who choose to withdraw from all courses, or reduce their semester registration by dropping some courses, should consult the Metropolitan College Course Schedule for deadlines and policies regarding tuition refunds. Metropolitan College students who withdraw must file an Official Withdrawal/ Leave of Absence Form at the Dean’s Office of Metropolitan College, 755 Commonwealth Avenue. Mere absence from classes does not reduce a student’s financial obligation nor guarantee that a final grade will not be recorded. Upon receipt of the Official Withdrawal/Leave of Absence Form from the Metropolitan College Dean’s Office, the Office of the University Registrar will adjust the student’s account. A table listing withdrawal deadline dates and percentage of refund allowed is published in the Metropolitan College Course Schedule for the semester in question. A credit balance (overpayment) from a withdrawal, cash payment, and/or adjustment may be refunded upon written request or personal visit to: Student Accounting Services, Boston University; 881 Commonwealth Avenue, Fourth Floor; Boston, MA 02215-1390

The University assumes no liability for failure to provide educational or related services arising out of, or due to, causes beyond the reasonable control of the University. The University will, however, exert reasonable efforts to provide comparable or substantially equivalent services, but its inability to do so shall not subject it to liability.

Student Fieldwork Costs

Students who take fieldwork courses should anticipate costs in addition to the tuition fee. These expenses vary with the location of the student’s field placement. The student should anticipate travel costs to and from the site of field placement, as well as field placement-related costs such as parking or public transportation and meal purchases. Approximate costs can be computed once the student has a definite fieldwork assignment. Students should consult their faculty advisors.
