Center for Professional EducationFor updated program information visit: www.bu.edu/extended Professional InvestigationThe Certificate in Professional Investigation is ideal for a range of individuals, including current investigative professionals, those in related occupations, and those seeking to enter this exciting and rewarding field. This certificate program offers a unique course of study in the private investigation profession and is taught by educators who are also experienced licensed private investigators. Designed to accommodate the busy schedules of working individuals, this comprehensive curriculum delivers over 160 hours of instruction in seven modules. Upon successful completion of the program, students will be awarded a Certificate in Professional Investigation from Boston University. Financial PlanningBoston University’s Program for Financial Planners was established to meet the need for professionals trained to assist clients in planning for present and future financial security. It is designed to meet the needs of a diverse array of financial professionals. The Program offers the following: • flexibility—you may take one or several courses at a time
and complete the seven-course curriculum; The Program for Financial Planners is offered as both a classroom-based program and an online program. Real EstateBoston University’s Program for Real Estate is designed to provide students with the requisite skills and knowledge to succeed in the increasingly sophisticated commercial real estate market and facilities management. Courses are taught in the evenings on the Charles River Campus. Students may enroll in a single course, or pursue a curriculum path. Faculty are drawn from the professional ranks of major real estate companies and financial institutions in the Boston area. Several of the real estate courses are offered in conjunction with professional trade associations, including the Institute for Real Estate Management (IREM), the Greater Boston Chapter of the Appraisal Institute, the Real Estate Finance Association (REFA), and the Greater Boston Real Estate Board. Paralegal Certificate ProgramThe Paralegal Certificate Program prepares individuals for a rewarding career as a paralegal in only twelve weeks of part-time study. Students will learn comprehensive legal theory from Boston University’s experienced scholar-teachers who, as practicing attorneys, bring real-life experiences into the classroom. In addition, Boston University’s Paralegal program has a unique technology component that provides students with relevant hands-on experience. Topics include legal research, legal writing and reasoning, technology and the paralegal, real estate, corporate law, and litigation.Other Certificates and SeminarsThe Center for Professional Education also offers a number of certificate programs, seminars, and/or courses in Medical and Legal Interpreting (in Spanish, Portuguese, and Chinese), Certified Management Accountant (CMA) Test Preparation, and Professional Fundraising. The Center also offers online programs in CMA Test Preparation, Finance, and Financial Planning. New programs are also being added beginning in fall of 2006. BU GlobalBU Global is the international unit of Boston University’s Metropolitan College and Extended Education. It provides a wide array of educational offerings, from diploma and exchange programs to customized training. The programs are designed for students from around the globe who recognize that a rigorous academic program from a world-renowned institution is the key to financial and professional success. The Graduate Diploma Program in Banking and Financial Services provides the opportunity to learn more about the world of financial services than is offered in most MBA programs. and Policy A Graduate Diploma in International Marketing allows participants to grasp all of the key components involved in the study of the multinational marketing environment. Program courses include: MET MK 601 Marketing, Environmental Evaluation, and Research Through the Graduate Diploma in Information Systems and Security, students utilize and combine the most current information on emerging technologies with practical hands-on application. Exposure to international regulatory issues, efficient database management, computer networks and security, and innovative advances in Internet technology allow for valuable insight into the current IT industry. Program courses include: MET CS 655 Security of Information Systems The School of Hospitality Administration Graduate Diploma in Hospitality and Tourism Management is taught by esteemed SHA faculty. This intensive twelve-week Summer Term program is enhanced with case studies, site visits, and guest lectures by top executives who provide a comprehensive, theoretical, global perspective on the field. Hands-on analysis and course research allow for critical insight on current managerial issues, consumer needs, successful marketing strategies, and achieving and maintaining excellence within the various sectors of the service industry. Program courses include: SHA HT 600 Hospitality and Tourism Issues, Trends, and “Best Practices” Finally, a Graduate Certificate in Project Management is also available. Courses such as MET AD 642 Program and Project Management, MET AD 643 Project Leadership and Communications, MET AD 644 Project Risk and Cost Management, and MET AD 645 International and Advanced Project Management are covered for this certificate. All Diploma Programs give students the opportunity to take part in a one-semester academic internship that provides valuable work experience. In addition, students who complete the Diploma and internship program are eligible for one year of optional practical training. They may also transfer approved coursework into the Master of Science in Administrative Studies. Lifelong LearningSeminars in the Arts and the Culinary ArtsThe Seminars in the Arts and Culinary Arts conducts programs in music, the visual arts, food preparation, and wine studies. Guest faculty include world-renowned musicians, museum curators, art historians, experts in the film industry, gastronomic luminaries, and Masters of Wine. The programs vary in length and complexity, and many of the seminars involve direct participation by those attending.The Elizabeth Bishop Wine Resource CenterThe Elizabeth Bishop Wine Resource Center is an educational facility established for the study and promotion of wine and other spirits in order to educate people about wine as a beverage, which, when consumed in moderation, can be part of an enjoyable and healthy lifestyle. Its purpose is to foster educational programs that explore all aspects of wine, including viticulture; enology; wine history; economics; distribution and marketing; the pairing of wine with food; and the psychological, physiological, and cultural phenomena of wine consumption. Cooking Up CultureCooking Up Culture is a children’s program designed to further human understanding through food or the medium of cuisine. This connecting thread through all humanity is not only an enjoyable educational tool, it is a necessary one. Understanding cultures and their cuisines though education breeds tolerance and acceptance, so necessary today in our ever-changing global community. That is why, in 1980, Boston University initiated Evergreen, a specially designed course of study and activities for persons 58 and over. The program includes lectures, discussions, artistic and cultural events, physical education, and recreation. Faculty members and distinguished guest instructors teach in both the lecture and workshop format. There is a nominal charge for each program. Evergreen participants may also enroll as auditors in most University credit courses on a space-available basis for a $50 registration fee. The intergenerational mix of elders and regular University students creates a lively interplay of energy and ideas. Sargent Center for Outdoor EducationSargent Center, a University facility located in the beautiful Monadnock Region of southwestern New Hampshire, is 90 minutes from the main campus. The Center, with its 700 acres of forest and fields, 22 miles of trails, and 60-acre Halfmoon Pond, featuring a floating glacial bog, includes two lodges (with dining), comfortable, rustic, winterized cabins, and meeting spaces. Sargent Center offers teambuilding and leadership development programs for students, faculty, and staff on a year-round basis. The facility is also available for retreats, conferences, research, and intensive weekend and summer session courses. Winter Family Camp (in January) and Adventure Camp are examples of the many activities at Sargent Center open to the Boston University community. Student and Corporate OutreachThe Office of Student and Corporate Outreach coordinates Metropolitan College programs with the training needs of the business, government, and professional communities by offering individualized degree programs (graduate and undergraduate), lectures, professional training, and advising on-site at companies. The Office works closely with individual companies to develop programs uniquely tailored to industry needs and to provide employees with unprecedented access to higher education at their place of work.
