(Boston)- Boston University announced today that it has selected SAP’s enterprise resource planning (ERP) software to provide a central source for faculty and staff to access key data and tools to automate and streamline its business processes, including financials, human resources and procurement.

“Our existing, home-grown IT solution was not flexible enough to help us keep pace with the growth of the university so we conducted a rigorous, two-year evaluation of software vendors,” said Joseph P. Mercurio, BU executive vice president. “We ultimately selected SAP for the robust functionality of its software right out-of-the box and the need for very little customization to meet the university’s current and future needs.”

By consolidating multiple legacy systems onto one single ERP system, Boston University will ensure maximum transparency across the university’s core business functions and provide easy, intuitive, and secure access to information for its nearly 8,500 employees.

“Another major factor in our decision was SAP’s commitment to the higher education community,” added BU President Robert A. Brown. “We are excited to join the many other leading institutions running SAP including those such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Johns Hopkins University and Health System, and Duke University.”

BU plans to begin implementation of the software in January of 2010 and have a phased roll out. The university will go live with SAP’s financial application first by July 2011 followed by the human resources and procurement applications in 2012.

“At SAP, we have a long-standing tradition of working with leading higher education and research institutions from around the globe to help them achieve their mission of supporting world-class research, teaching and learning,” said Rob Enslin, president, SAP North America. “Boston University has great vision, and we are proud to welcome them as a lighthouse customer and look forward to a successful partnership that will result in streamlined business processes and increased efficiency for the university.”
