BOSTON – Boston University kicks off a series of public master classes in opera with a visit from soprano Renee Fleming on September 28, 2006. Presented by the University’s Opera Institute and the Voice Department in the School of Music in the College of Fine Arts, and the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center, the master class series provides a public demonstration of talented BU Opera Institute and vocal performance students undergoing performance instruction by world renowned opera stars.

Other master classes in the series will be conducted by opera icons including tenor Jerry Hadley; mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves; soprano Dawn Upshaw; soprano Deborah Voigt; mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade and baritone Richard Stilwell. All classes will include a question-and-answer period and are free and open to members of the BU community, as well as the public.

The series coincides with the 20th Anniversary of the Opera Institute, a non-degree professional training program for the advanced singer preparing for an operatic career. According to the Institute Director Sharon Daniels, “obtaining direct insight from these distinguished internationally renowned artists profoundly enhances our singers’ training. Great artists inspire great art-making, and personal contact is definitely an exciting advantage that we know our students will enjoy from these experiences.”

The Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center, which collects the manuscripts from individuals who play a significant part in the fields of journalism, poetry, literature, dance, music, theatre, film, television and political and religious movements, will present exhibitions of manuscript material illustrating some of the careers of these distinguished artists, as well as some of its other opera holdings. Director Vita Paladino emphasizes the Center’s commitment to present exhibitions and events that will be a source of education and enrichment for students, as well as the entire local community, declaring “the inspiration for this series comes from the wonderfully talented and gifted students in the College of Fine Arts. I just want to show them off to the public.”
