(Boston) — Susan Johnston, a 2005 Boston University graduate from the College of Communication, won the William M. Cavanaugh Grant awarded by the Publicity Club of New England at its annual Bell Ringer gala earlier this month. Johnston recently received a Bachelor of Science degree in public relations from the college’s Mass Communication program.

“Our organization is delighted to honor Susan with this award as she embarks on her career in communications,” said Bill Fleishman, president of the Publicity Club of New England and executive vice president for Cone, LLC. “We received a record number of entries for the Cavanaugh Grant this year and, while the quality of all of the applicants was outstanding, the Board felt that Susan’s entry was especially deserving of this grant. I know that the Board members — and, indeed, all Club members — join me in offering our heartfelt congratulations to Susan. We wish her the very best and look forward to what we’re certain will be significant contributions to our profession in the years to come.”

Each June, in conjunction with the annual Bell Ringer Awards, the Publicity Club awards one student the William M. Cavanaugh $1,000 Student Grant, named for a founding member of the club. The award, which is based on essays and recommendations, goes to a junior or senior studying in an accredited journalism, public relations, or communications program at a New England college who is nominated by a supervisor or faculty member with knowledge of the student’s abilities, work ethic, and anticipated career path.

“I’m thrilled to be recognized by some of New England’s leading public relations practitioners,” said Johnston. “I have wanted to do publicity for the performing arts since I came to Boston University and hopefully this will open even more doors in that arena.”

Johnston, originally from Mukilteo, Wash., is currently working for the Bank of America Celebrity Series in Boston.
