Obesity Epidemic in the 21st Century is Focus of Boston University Science and Public Policy Conference

(Boston, Mass.) — The Knight School for Science & Medical Journalism in Boston University’s College of Communication will sponsor a one-day conference on translating science into effective public policies that can address this nation’s epidemic of obesity. The conference is scheduled for Friday, October 3 in the University’s George Sherman Union.
William Dietz, obesity researcher and director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity will be the featured speaker. Dr. Dietz will discuss government policy responses to child and adolescent obesity.
Panel sessions will address medical, societal, and legislative aspects of the obesity epidemic. Panel moderators are New York Times reporter Denise Grady; Codirector of the Knight Center Ellen Ruppell Shell, author of The Hungry Gene, a look at obesity in the United States; and, Associate Dean of the Boston University School of Public Health Leonard Glantz.
Panel moderators will be joined by noted obesity experts from government, academia, and health organizations including Margo Wootan of the Center for Science and the Public Interest; Samuel Klein of Washington University and the North American Organization for the Study of Obesity; and Howard Frumkin of Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health.
The conference is free and open to the public, although registration is required. Deadline for registration is September 19.
