President of Carnegie Corporation to Discuss New Autobiography at Boston University

(Boston, Mass.) — Dr. Vartan Gregorian, president of the Carnegie Corporation of New York, will discuss his new autobiography, “The Road to Home: My Life and Times” (Simon & Schuster, 2003), at the Boston University School of Management auditorium on Monday, May 12, 2003. In “The Road to Home: My Life and Times,” Dr. Gregorian describes his public and private lives as “one education after another.”

Born in Tabriz, Iran of Armenian parents, he received his elementary education in Iran and his secondary education in Lebanon. In 1956 Dr. Gregorian entered Stanford University, where he graduated with honors in 1958 and received a Ph.D. in history and humanities in 1964. In June 1997, Dr. Gregorian assumed the role of 12th president of the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the grant-making institution founded by Andrew Carnegie in 1911. Previously, he was the president of Brown University for nine years and served as president of the New York Public Library from 1981 until 1989. Dr. Gregorian was a Trustee of Boston University from 1976 until 1989, when he was made an Honorary Trustee for life.

Gregorian, whose publications include “The Emergence of Modern Afghanistan: Politics of Reform and Modernization, 1880-1946 (Stanford University Press, 1969) and “Islam: a Mosaic, not a Monolith” (Brookings Institution Press, 2003) has taught at San Francisco State College, the University of California at Los Angeles, and the University of Texas at Austin. In 1972 he joined the University of Pennsylvania where he was appointed Tarzian Professor of History and professor of South Asian history. In 1974 he was the founding dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania and four years later became its twenty-third provost, where he served until 1981.
