(Boston, Mass.) – The Boston University Center for Philosophy and History of Science and the Colloquium for the Philosophy of Science will present “Perspectives on Quantum Gravity: A Tribute to John Stachel,” on Thursday, March 6, 2003 starting at 9 a.m. in the Boston University Photonics Center. The colloquium is being held in honor of the 75th birthday of Professor Stachel, who will be presenting the first lecture of the colloquium entitled “A Brief History of Spacetime”.
The day-long series of lectures will offer a look at the latest theories on spacetime, quantum theories of gravity, string theory, and quantum geometry. Among the speakers will be Giovanni Amelino-Camelia, who received his doctorate from the physics department at Boston University. Presently a physicist at the University of Rome, Amelino-Camelia now collaborates with Dr. Stachel. He will speak on “Measurability Analysis and the Search for Observable Consequences in Quantum Gravity.”
Stachel, a professor of physics emeritus, is director of the Boston University Center for Einstein Studies, which has sponsored conferences on quantum gravity, the history of general relativity, and Einstein’s early years. Stachel also co-edits the Center’s “Einstein Studies,” ten volumes one of which focuses on the topic of Thursday’s session and is titled “Conceptual Problems of Quantum Gravity.”
The Colloquium for Philosophy of Science offers frequent public lectures that reflect the Center’s multifaceted agenda, a diverse program that fosters interdisciplinary and international scholarly dialogue concerning the historical and contemporary development of science, its conceptual foundations, and its cultural context.
The lectures are free, open to the public and are accessible by wheelchair. For information, please call 617/353-2604, or visit http://www.bu.edu/philo/centers/cphs/.
