Boston, Mass. — Boston University athletes kick-off the holiday season with visits to area elementary schools and children’s hospitals this Wednesday, December 12 through December 14, 2001 to promote literacy as part of the Boston University and Barnes & Noble “First Reader” Program. Sixty-six students have volunteered to participate in the third year of the program, which reaches 500 second graders in the Allston and Brighton areas.
The Boston University mascot, Rhett the Terrier, will accompany athletes from men’s and women’s soccer and crew, women’s basketball and softball, wrestling, and field hockey team as they read holiday stories and distribute gifts to the children. Boston University, in a partnership with Barnes & Noble, provides first reader chapter books to each child and teacher to read in the classroom. Over the three days, students will visit Horace Mann School for the Deaf, Winship Elementary, Baldwin Elementary, Franciscan Children’s Hospital, Gardner Elementary, St. Anthony’s Elementary, Hamilton Elementary, St. Columbkille’s Elementary, Our Lady of Presentation Elementary and Garfield Elementary School.
