Boston, Mass. — It’s not your typical holiday get-together, but it will be festive and fun this Saturday, December 1, 2001, when Boston University alumni and students join forces with Best Buddies International to host the Best Buddies Book Blowout. The sorting and wrapping of some 5,000 children’s books will take place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at BU’s Sargent Gym.

Some 200 volunteers will gift-wrap books donated by BU alumni and other sponsors, including Radio Disney and Barnes & Noble, to give to needy children this holiday season. The book drive will benefit Reach Out and Read, a national organization that distributes children’s books to pediatric facilities in an effort to promote literacy at an early age.

Founded in 1987 by Anthony Kennedy Shriver, Best Buddies International, with chapters on more than 500 college and high school campuses in the U.S. and Canada, provides one-to-one friendships between college and high school student volunteers and people with developmental disabilities. This year marks the 10th anniversary of BU’s chapter of Best Buddies. The Massachusetts chapter of the organization is located in Newton, and Newton Mayor David Cohen will join the volunteers at 3 p.m. to recognize their efforts.
