(Boston, Mass.) — The Boston University Sherman Gallery presents the recent work of famed New York painter and printmaker Pat Steir. Pat Steir: Recent Prints runs from Thursday, March 15 through Sunday, April 22, at 775 Commonwealth Avenue, second floor.

Steir’s work depicts a style of abstract expressionism with literal renditions of birds, animals and figures in symbolic situations. Her paintings from the 1980s explored great works by artists throughout history as she painted a number of self-portraits. Each was painted in the manner of a different historical artist.

Steir’s later works moved further towards abstraction. Much of her work reflects her belief that reality and abstraction are one in the same, where their only difference rests in how one views them. Steir uses a variety of artistic techniques and has a predilection for exploring the nature of visual signs and symbols.

Steir has exhibited in major collections both nationally and internationally, most notably, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, the Guggenheim, the Metropolitan and the Tate Gallery, London.

On Thursday, March 15, Steir, a Boston University School for the Arts 2001 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, will give a Dean’s Convocation Lecture in the SFA Concert Hall, 855 Commonwealth Ave. from 1-2 p.m.

Pat Steir: Recent Prints complements the 2001 North American Print Biennial being held simultaneously at BU’s 808 Gallery, which highlights the scope and excellence of contemporary printmaking. The Biennial, sponsored by BU’s School for the Arts and the Boston Printmakers, is the most prestigious printmaking show in the Northeast. The national exhibition will also remain open through April 8. All events are free and open to the public.
