THEME:”Alternative Protein Sources”

BACKGROUND:MS/DI (Master of Science/Dietetic Internship) Nutrition students of Sargent College have created bulletin boards, a display table, nutrition information and quick dietary assessments that will be featured in the dining halls of Warren Towers, West Campus, Myles and Towers on December 8 during the lunch hours. The theme of this Nutrition Awareness Day is “Alternative Protein Sources” and students will aim to educate their fellow students. The topic was selected because there are many vegans and vegetarians at B.U. and they feel there is not enough offered in these areas at the dining halls. Materials will display the importance of protein and foods that many do not realize contain protein.

These same students are also working with the B.U. Food Rescue Program, a student-based outreach program, in which they are volunteering to serve a meal and/or assemble food pantry baskets at the Food Pantry in Allston. The MS/DI students at Sargent will not only volunteer to serve meals and assemble food baskets but they will be creating nutrition educational materials that will help to educate the food pantry participants. Students will create materials on how to use the foods available at the pantry to create healthy, nutritious meals for themselves and their families.

Their participation in these events are educational experiences required by the American Dietetic Association as part of the criteria to meet certification as registered dietitians.
