Boston University Medical Center Names New Director Of Laboratory Animal Science Center

(Boston, Mass.) — Newton resident Mary A. Ellenberger, DVM, MS, ACLAM, has been named director of the Laboratory Animal Science Center at Boston University Medical Center effective August 1. Ellenberger, who had previously served as director of Laboratory Animal Medicine at Tufts University/New England Medical Center, will oversee the animal care and use program which support various research endeavors at the medical campus.

An instructor at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Tufts University School of Medicine, Ellenberger also provides consultative services for a variety of biopharmaceutical companies and medical facilities in the area.

Ellenberger is a Diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM), a member of the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) and has served as a site visitor for the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC).

According to Aram Chobanian, MD, dean of Boston University School of Medicine and provost of Boston University Medical Campus, “Dr. Ellenberger brings a wealth of experience to this important role. She will effectively lead the educational and scientific activities of the center.”

Among her many activities and awards, she has served as chair of ACLAM’s Strategic Planning Committee and currently is a member of its Forum Program Committee. Ellenberger has also chaired the national AALAS’ Foundation Board and has served as President of the New England Branch of AALAS.

Ellenberger received her Masters of Science and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University. She performed her postdoctoral training in lab animal medicine at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
