Mediterranea (2015): Film Discussion

  • Starts: 6:00 am on Tuesday, July 7, 2020
  • Ends: 7:00 am on Tuesday, July 7, 2020
In Europe, from London to Milan, citizens have taken to streets to show their solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, drawing attention to structures of inequality owing to Europe’s colonial past and to the injustices faced by racial and ethnic minorities. Over the last decade, as Europe has struggled to integrate thousands of people from Africa, the Middle East, and south Asia, anti-immigrant sentiment has grown, along with racist rhetoric, fueling the rise of right wing populist parties. It will be interesting to see whether the outpouring of voices in support of Black lives in recent weeks will lead to more welcoming policies toward migrants and refugees. By way of exploring the question of race in Europe, we are hosting on Tuesday, July 7 at 6 PM a discussion of Jonas Caprignano’s 2015 film Mediterranea. The film is based on true events – namely the anti-immigrant riots in the southern Italian town of Rosarno. It traces the perilous journey of two close friends from Burkina Faso in West Africa who cross the Mediterranean to settle in Italy and the struggles they face upon arrival to survive and to avoid deportation. The conversation will be led by Daniela Caruso, Professor of Law and Director of the Center for the Study of Europe. Jonas Carpignano was born in 1984 to an Italian father and African-American mother. He grew up between New York City and Rome. Mediterranea is his first feature film. It debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015 and was nominated for three Independent Spirit Awards including best first feature. His second feature film A Ciambra premiered at the 2017 Cannes film festival where it won the Europa Cinema Label prize for best European film and was named the best Italian Film of 2017 by the National Syndicate of Italian Film Critics.
