Design
The NEIDL is a 192,000 square feet, 7 story building that includes BSL-2 BSL-3, and BSL-4 capacities. The containment area includes imaging, aerobiology, insectaries, and other specialized cores and support spaces. In addition, the facility houses a state-of-the-art BSL-4 training simulator to provide hands-on training for research staff, faculty, and some support personnel.
Research
The NEIDL is constructed to maximize research capacity; the total building area includes dedicated space for the following:
- 48% – Admin & Bldg support
- 20% - BSL-2 Research
- 16% - BSL-4 Research
- 13% – BSL-3 Research
- 3% - BSL- 2 Clinic
Safety
All critical building systems within the NEIDL are redundant to ensure safety and uninterrupted operations at all containment levels. The NEIDL site is designed in accordance with Level 5, NIH Security Guidelines, the most stringent and protective measures defined in the guidelines.
