Program 7
Program 7: Speed Reading for Work, School, and Recreation for Adults
and Entering High School Seniors
Goals
The goal of this program is to save you time. You will double your reading
speed in textbooks, and triple your speed in easier reading materials.*
In addition, you will learn comprehension, concentration, and retention
techniques that will enable you to remember more, even though you are
reading faster. You will virtually eliminate re-reading. You will also
learn useful techniques for studying textbooks, taking notes, preparing
for tests, and developing your vocabulary.
Saving time is not the only benefit of this course. Many of our students
enjoy reading much more than they did before taking this class, and are
reading many more books - both fiction and non-fiction - for personal
enrichment. As a result of the speed and comprehension gains made in this
class, these students now become more completely absorbed in the content
of what they read.
Instructor
Instructors are drawn from the faculty of the Institute of Reading Development.
Curriculum design and instructor training are supervised by Paul Copperman,
the author of two bestselling books on education and a Presidential appointee
to the National Council on Educational Research.
Format
The class is conducted in a workshop format in which you will practice
and master speed reading, comprehension, and study skills. At home, you
will continue to practice the skills on your regular academic, professional,
or personal reading materials. Class meets for two and a half hours, once
a week, for five weeks. Between lessons, students practice 45 minutes
to one hour, four times per week.
Skills
Speed-Reading Techniques:
You will master several eye-tracking techniques for reading words more
rapidly, and, you will learn to apply these techniques successfully to
a wide variety of reading materials. As you learn to read more smoothly
and quickly, you will be able to focus more clearly on the meaning and
content of what you read.
Comprehension Training and Study Strategies:
You will learn a step-by-step procedure that will dramatically improve
your ability to understand and retain information in a wide variety of
materials, including non-fiction books, journal articles, textbooks, manuals,
and pleasure reading. First, you will learn to develop an overview of
the material presented. This overview includes an understanding of the
author's background, the subject matter, and the author's purpose. Second,
you will learn to relate the author's purpose to the book's structure
or organization. These procedures enforce an active reading style, and
result in more thorough, critical comprehension and better long-term retention.
Vocabulary:
Students learn Greek and Latin roots that hold the key to developing a
larger vocabulary. Using our engaging Word Power vocabulary workbook,
students master hundreds of new words. More importantly, they adopt habits
necessary for continued vocabulary development.
Materials
You will receive a Student Manual which contains in-class exercises, homework
activities for each week of the course, and a detailed set of notes describing
all skills and activities taught in the program.

See sample pages from
the Student Manual (PDF document). You will also receive a Word Power
vocabulary workbook, which uses engaging exercises to help you master
hundreds of new words.
