The quality of care provided in our hospitals and in other health care settings is dependent on how that care is delivered. One research focus has been to establish and measure the impact of variability on quality of care as reflected in medical errors, sentinel events and mortality rates.
In the manuscript, Eugene Litvak, Ph.D and colleagues present findings that demonstrate and quantify the impact variability in nurses’ patient care burden has on hospital mortality.
Another area of focus is establishing the positive impact on quality of care resulting from operational improvements. The experience of smoothing surgical flow at Boston Medical Center demonstrates this impact.
