  • Complete MH 820 (Proseminar in Musicology and Ethnomusicology)

End of first year

  • Complete MH 749 (Research and Bibliography)
  • Complete first language requirement (GRS Reading Course or Departmental Language Exam)

During third semester

  • Complete second language requirement (GRS Reading Course or Departmental Language Exam)
  • Complete all course requirements except MH 799 (Master’s Thesis)
  • Submit thesis proposal

 End of second year

  • Pass Comprehensive Exams
  • Submit completed thesis

MA/MM, Ethnomusicology

End of first semester

  • Complete MH 820 (Proseminar in Musicology and Ethnomusicology)

End of first year

  • Complete MH 749 (Research and Bibliography)
  • Complete first language requirement

End of third semester

  • Complete MH 861 (Contemplating Ethnomusicology); MH 860 (Research Methods in Ethnomusicology)
  • Pass second language exam
  • 4-8 credits in courses recommended to be taken outside department
  • Submit thesis proposal
  • 30-minute MA oral exam (post-bachelor only)

End of second year

  • Complete two semesters of MH 561 (World Music Ensemble), taken for 0 or 1 credit.
  • Complete audit or TA for MH 336/346 (Musical Cultures of the World)
  • Pass Comprehensive Exams
  • Submit completed thesis
  • IRB compliance

PhD, Ethnomusicology

  • Complete MH 820 (Proseminar) and MH 860 (Research Methods in Ethnomusicology)
  • Pass first language exam

End of second year

  • Complete MH 861 (Contemplating Ethnomusicology)
  • Pass second language exam
  • 4–8 credits in courses recommended to be taken outside department
  • Choose dissertation topic
  • 30-minute MA oral exam (post-bachelor only)

End of fifth semester

  • Submit annotated bibliographies: 3 areas relevant to dissertation topic, plus analysis
  • Complete audit or TA for MH 336/346 (Musical Cultures of the World)
  • Complete two semesters of MH 561 (taken for 0 or 1 credit as a student, or taught).

End of third year

  • Qualifying Exams completed.
  • Submit dissertation prospectus within 3 months after passing Qualifying Exams
  • IRB compliance
