Departmental Newsletter: December 2012
Marié Abe has been having quite a month. Debo Band, the Ethiopian funk group in which she plays the accordion, recently won a Best Live Band of the Year nomination from Boston Music Awards, and their self-titled album has been picked as one of NPR’s Top 50 of the year. NPR wrote that the album is “one of the best finds of the year, bar none.” And in terms of her scholarly progress, the Boston University Center for the Humanities has awarded Professor Abe a Junior Faculty Fellowship, which gives her a whole year off from teaching and departmental duties to focus on her book project and to meet monthly with other colleagues in all fields of the humanities.
The Center for Early Music Studies presented a lecture by Martin Pearlman, the music director of Boston Baroque, on performing Handel’s Messiah, and will present a lecture-demonstration by Patrick Wood Uribe on the music of the seventeenth-century violin virtuoso Thomas Baltzar.
The Department will be celebrating the holiday season and the end of the semester with an all-department party on the evening of December 12th.
