New Year’s Newsletter from the Chairman

yudkinSince the New Year marks the approximate midpoint of the academic calendar, which runs from June to May, I would like to take this opportunity to celebrate the wonderful community that is the Department of Musicology and Ethnomusicology, its faculty and its students.  We are experiencing a flourishing of our activities that is unprecedented.  Seven years ago, we were a department with 3 tenured faculty and 2 adjunct faculty and half a dozen graduate students.  Now we are 10 full-time faculty and nearly 30 graduate students, with all-department activities once a week and a monthly lecture series.  We encompass ethnomusicology in our studies, and we engage in scholarly activities across the country and around the world.

During this academic year alone students have given or will give 26 scholarly papers at both national and international conferences; and members of the faculty have given or will give 30 scholarly papers.  Students have published or had accepted for publication 2 articles; faculty, 22 articles.  Students have been or will be involved in 5 significant performances, faculty in 20.  Faculty members have won 5 awards and distinguished appointments.  (The details of these accomplishments may be found in the accompanying document.)

These numbers do not take into account other remarkable news: that for the International Musicological Society’s International Congress (which meets only every 5 years) 5 members of the Department have had papers accepted and will read them at the Congress this summer in Rome. These members include 2 faculty and 3 students.  Thus our School will be represented at the most prestigious quincennial international musicological gathering by no fewer than 5 people, a remarkable number for a small department.  Indeed I regard all these accomplishments as remarkable for a small department.   They put into striking relief the spirit and dedication of our entire community.
