Acoustic scattering from mine-like objects in an underwater environment: Experiments, modeling and physical interpretation -- ABSTRACT: Our work concerns the detection and classification of objects in an underwater environment. Results are presented from the recent Target and Reverberation Experiment (TREX13) conducted in the Gulf of Mexico, where UXO and mine-like targets were placed proud on a sand/water interface. Hybrid models have been developed for a subset of these targets using a 2-D axisymmetric finite element (FE) model coupled to a 3-D propagation model. Finally, a technique is illustrated whereby the FE model and a simple physical acoustics model are examined on a mode-by-mode basis, ultimately distinguishing the different physics driving the target response.
