Lindsay Gifford
Part-time Lecturer in Arabic
Lindsay Gifford is a PhD candidate in Cultural Anthropology at Boston
University, where she teaches Elementary Modern Arabic I and II and is
a Teaching Fellow in Anthropology. Her research interests include Syria
and the Middle East, Muslim societies, political and economic anthropology, and gender issues in the Middle East.
She is currently writing her dissertation under the title "Getting By in Damascus," which looks at the ways Syrians get by not only financially, but also socially and psychologically living under an authoritarian regime and in a patriarchal culture, experiencing the tensions of integrating modern economic models and media with traditional patriarchal values. The research for her dissertation was conducted in
2006/2007 with the support of a Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation
Research Abroad Fellowship. Lindsay was a Dean's Fellow in the Graduate
School of Arts and Sciences from 2002 to 2006.
