CAS LR 111, 112 - First-Year Russian I, II
An introduction to the fundamentals of Russian grammar. Extensive practice in orthography and pronunciation: oral drills, development of comprehension and conversation skills. Reading of simple texts.
CAS LR 211, 212 - Second-Year Russian I, II
The fundamentals of Russian grammar and syntax. Development of reading and oral skills.

CAS LR 282 - Russian Prose Classics of the Twentieth Century (in English translation)
Introduction to the major writers of twentieth-century Russian prose and to the literary traditions that they represent through a close reading of selected texts. Readings will include works by the following authors: Chekhov, Sologub, Belyj, Babel, Olesha, Bulgakov, and Solzhenitsyn.
CAS LR 304 - Third-Year Russian II: Reading, Grammar Review, and Conversation
Reading original unabridged Russian prose and poetry. Intensive work on improvement of fluency and quality of expression; special attention to pronunciation.

CAS LR 350 - Introduction to Analysis of Russian Prose Texts
LR 350 is intended to be a close reading of six classical texts, representing the major literary movements in nineteenth-century Russia. Texts will include Karamzin's Poor Lisa (Sentimentalism), Pushkin's The Queen of Spades (Romantic Realism), Gogol's Nevsky Prospect (Satirical Realism), Tostoy's The Devil (Moralistic Realism), Dostoevsky's The Dream of a Ridiculous Man (The Realism of Alienation), and Chekov's The Lady with a Dog ("Impressionist" Realism). Discussion will be devoted to such topics as narrative techniques, characterization of protagonists, style of language, cultural modalities (explicit and implicit) and ethnic identity (are these stories typically "Russian" in any way?).

CAS LR 441 - Russian Press
Current events from Russian sources. Everyday reading from Russian Newspapers. New trends in Russian Press. Study of psychology of modern society, especially young people. Different types of Russian magazines. Examination of the techniques and ethical problems of journalists who are working for progressive magazines or for the governmental press. Evaluation of contemporary documentary and video.
