Essentials of structure, oral practice, introduction to the writing system.

CAS LC 211, 212 - Third- and Fourth-Semester Chinese

Review of structure and grammar, practice in conversation and writing, introduction to reading.

CAS LC 216 - Chinese Reading and Writing II

An intensive course covering second-year Chinese in one semester for students who have completed LC 116 or students who speak Mandarin fluently and possess some reading and writing skills. Emphasis on reading and writing and analysis of grammar. Satisfactory completion of CAS LC 216 fulfills the CAS language requirement.

Developing students reading skills in classical Chinese with emphasis on grammatical components; through reading original texts from ancient mythology, philosophy, literature, students will not only end with a higher level of Chinese language proficiency, but also gain a better understanding modern Chinese written form and idioms.

CAS LC 470 - Topics in Chinese Literature and Culture

Topic for Spring 2010: Visual Politics: Propaganda Art, Literature and “Model Films” during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Study of “model films,” poster art, and literature during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) in the larger cultural and political context of film-making before and after that decade. Taking films and posters as the main focus, this course takes a critical approach to the cultural origin of art and literature production during the Revolution and seeks to provide an understanding of how art and politics were merged in these art forms.
