Introduction to Literature. WR 100 Equivalent

CAS XL 100 introduces basic methods of literary study through interpretation and discussion of texts from a wide variety of literary traditions. Topics include symbolism, genre, translation, film adaptation, cross-cultural appropriation, and theories of “cultural capital.” We will pay special attention to the question of what makes literary language literary; to oral and written language as a medium of expression; and to the more general  problem of producing “legitimate” language in academic and other social contexts.  All works read in English; no prerequisites.
